MA ZU TEMPLE - GODDESS OF THE SEA

Ma Zu or the Goddess of the Sea, is extremely popular in

Taiwan, Hong Kong and along the coastal areas of China.

She ensures protection from the ravaged of the seas.

Legend has it that Ma Zu was in fact a young girl called Lin Mo who lived between 960-987, and helped heal a lot of sick and poor people.

Her short life was explained by a daring rescue of a merchant ship in which she was swept off by a wave and perished as she attempted to

rescue one last member of the ship. After her death, people set up a temple

in awe of her and so that people could come to pay their respects.

She is also the patron Deity of Fishermen and Sailors.
